Have you been tossing around names for your new business with a friend or your spouse? Do you think you have a good name, but you are not 100% sure of it yet?

Here’s the best test: Imagine you are at a cocktail party or chamber mixer. Someone asks you the name of your business, and you say it out loud, in public, to a person who is hearing it for the first time.

How do you feel when you say it? Excited and proud? Or a little stressed and unsure? Do you feel that you will need to spell it for them? When you say it out loud, will they easily understand what you said, or do you think you may need to repeat it and explain it?

Find someone, or several people, that have not heard the new name and say to them, in person.

If you are outgoing and talkative and social, you may have already done this, but many creative people with new business ideas are in a secretive huddle with their closest partners, deciding on their name and their marketing ideas. Then, as they begin to explain their name in public, and hand out business cards and brochures, they realize they feel a little uncomfortable with their choices.

I’ve been in this predicament before. Believe me, imagine how much more fun your business marketing will be when you really love saying your business name!
